I have always been a gear head, a car fanatic since I can remember. When I was a little boy, RC cars were the closest thing to real ones; there are RC car companies that specialize in competition and realism, so no doubt I did whatever was possible to put my hands on one.

Those scale RC cars use the same components as a real one, motor, transmission, steering, suspension, etc. And they can even be powered by fuel or battery. That’s how my passion for electric cars began.

Fast forward a few years, I saw an electric car scale 1/1. Fully functional with all the modern design, electronics, etc that can be driven and used on a normal road.

It was the BMW i3, carbon fiber body, fully electric, rear-wheel drive, ultimate driving machine. It was love at first sight, so I said yes and took it home.

After a few years of driving an EV I can say that I like the concept, it’s totally different from a regular (gas) car, although I am not sure if it’s the right fit for daily commute.

You have to plan ahead of time the whole day, take into consideration the weather, route, speed, weight, tire pressure, charging areas, time at charging stations,

At the beginning, it was novelty, excitement; everybody was taking pictures of it, the design itself was attractive, the light sequence, modern technology, everything made sense until extreme cold or hot weather get in your way.

Then you have to make a big decision, windows down or A/C, heater on or extra jacket, can I get to a grocery store or not. It was becoming a hustle to drive it daily; if I had to do something different than my regular activities, I was constrained.

So I decided to let it go and switch to a regular gas-powered vehicle.

Do I miss my electric car? At this time I only miss the gas savings.

What is the perfect range? Whatever your daily commute is multiply by 3 times at least. ( you are going to lose 10%-20% just for weather, a little extra if you like amenities)

Would I buy another EV? Definitely, I enjoy driving an electric car; as a matter of fact, I already have pre-order one.
